Novelty 2025: At the beginning of the 1970s, DB had a great need for electric locomotives for maximum speeds of up to 160 km/h, which were to fulfil the performance programme of the class 110 and replace old electric locomotives. Between 1974 and 1984, 227 locomotives were built by the participating companies Krauss-Maffei, Henschel, Krupp, Siemens, AEG and BBC. The locomotives were initially fitted with pantographs, which were largely replaced by single-arm pantographs. The locomotives intended for S-Bahn use on the Rhine and Ruhr were painted light grey ex works with an orange belly band and train destination indicator.
