Novelty 2026: For fast passenger services between Warsaw and Kraków, PKP required a new class of locomotives in the late 1980s that could handle sustained operations at 160 km/h. The machines of class EP05, rebuilt from EU05 units from 1973, were limited in number and aging. Therefore, Pafawag in Wroc?aw developed a new locomotive type, 104E. The machines fully met the expectations placed on them, and PKP purchased an additional 45 units by 1997. The EP09 was deployed nationwide, almost completely replacing the EP05.
